I would say that slut falls between idiot and moron on a scale of insulting words, and in that case falls within the realm of "things you can call your friends or your enemies"

On the other hand, it becomes a much larger issue when used across genders. Specifically, when a male calls a woman "slut" to her face it's approximately equivalent to saying "bitch, suck my dick" if it isn't accepted by both parties as a joke.
