The Case of Chris Benoit

See that video? That's a real badass MFer right there. Chris Benoit was one of the best was The Best Technical Wrestler in the entire world. I emphasize "technical" because Chris Benoit was able to boil the sport down to a science. He wrestled in Canada, America, Japan, and a few other places and no matter where he went he was the best! He acquired titles all over the world and he and Chris Jericho made history when they defeated Stone Cold Steve Austin and Triple H, the most dominate and short-lived tagteam in the history of the business. Although Pimpd might have to check me on that one. Chris Benoit was a real badass.

Until..., he went and killed his entire family and himself.

On June 25, 2007, police entered Benoit's home on a "welfare check" after several missed appointments, leading to concerns.[100] The officers discovered the bodies of Benoit, his wife Nancy, and their 7-year-old son Daniel at around 2:30 p.m. EDT.[101] Upon investigating, no additional suspects were sought by authorities.[102] It was determined that Benoit had committed the murders.[103]

Over a three day period, Benoit had killed his wife and son before he hanged himself.[15][16] His wife was bound before the killing. Benoit's son was drugged and likely unconscious before Benoit strangled him.[104] Benoit then committed suicide with a weight machine.[103]

WWE canceled the scheduled three hour long live Raw show on June 25, and replaced the broadcast version with a tribute to his life and career, featuring his past matches, segments from the Hard Knocks: The Chris Benoit Story DVD, and comments from wrestlers and announcers.[105] However, once the details of the murder–suicide became apparent, WWE quickly and quietly began distancing itself from the wrestler by removing merchandise and no longer mentioning him. The June 26 episode of ECW began with Vince McMahon addressing the television audience about the circumstances and announcing that there would be no mention of Benoit that night other than his comments. There was no mention of Benoit at all the following Friday on Smackdown.

Toxicology reports released on July 17, 2007 revealed that at their time of death, Nancy had three different drugs in her system: Xanax, hydrocodone, and hydromorphone, all of which were found at the therapeutic rather than toxic levels. Daniel was found to have Xanax in his system, which led the chief medical examiner to believe that he was sedated before he was murdered. Benoit was found to have Xanax, hydrocodone, and an elevated level of testosterone, caused by a synthetic form of the hormone, in his system. The chief medical examiner attributed the testosterone level to Benoit possibly being treated for a deficiency caused by previous steroid abuse or testicular insufficiency. There was no indication that anything in Benoit's body contributed to his violent behavior that led to the murder–suicide, concluding that there was no "roid-rage" involved.[106] Prior to the murder–suicide, Benoit had been given illegal steroids not in compliance with WWE's Talent Wellness Program in February 2006. Benoit received nandrolone and anastrozole. During the investigation into steroid abuse, it was revealed that other wrestlers had also been given steroids.[107][108]

After the double-murder suicide, former wrestler Christopher Nowinski contacted Michael Benoit, father of Chris Benoit, suggesting that years of trauma to his son's brain may have led to his actions. Tests were conducted on Benoit's brain by Julian Bailes, the head of neurosurgery at West Virginia University, and results showed that "Benoit's brain was so severely damaged it resembled the brain of an 85-year-old Alzheimer's patient."[109] He was reported to have had an advanced form of dementia, similar to the brains of four retired NFL players who had suffered multiple concussions, sank into depression, and harmed themselves or others. Bailes and his colleagues concluded that repeated concussions can lead to dementia, which can contribute to severe behavioral problems.[110] Benoit's father suggests that brain damage may have been the leading cause of the crime.[111] He also confirmed that his son was quietly cremated, but what was done with the ashes is not public knowledge.[112]

Though I'm not an expert in this, the list of the dead wrestlers clearly shows that something is very very wrong at the core of the industry itself.

And you are correct. As the article mentioned, wrestlers do not have an off season. They are given very little in the way of rest and they constantly perform stunts that place them in a great deal of danger. While wrestling as a performance piece is very much fake (sorry Pimpd) the moves these men and women perform are incredibly dangerous. Even when everything is executed properly however people still get hurt because it's part of the job. This constant wear and tear on the body takes a sizeable toll. The only time a lot of the bigger stars like Triple H get a vacation is when they're injured.

Some wrestlers have had a severe dependence on steroids and painkillers which cause even more problems. However, it almost seems as though the industry not only permits chemical dependency but demands it.

This article makes me wonder if John Cena also uses pain killers, steroids and the likes. I hope not. :(

I knew Jeff couldn't keep his ass out of prison but Matt? Damn. My major issue with the Hardies is that they know good and damn well that thousands of kids look up to them and they feed them that "Live For The Moment" bullshit which has gotten them into a great deal of trouble. Scott Hall, well as I understood it Scott Hall was usually intoxicated while he was on camera. His slurred speech is part of what made him a superstar. I suppose that it has not dawned on him that there are things you cannot do in your old age.

I want to point out something from Benoit's case in that it was reported that he suffered tremendous brain damage which might have led up to the double murder suicide committed by him. Men and women alike take very dangerous moves like a DDT (placing someone in an underarm headlock and driving their skull into the mat) to standard suplexes and body slams, all of which cause trauma to the brain. Now you take someone who wrestles 100 days out of year with constant trauma being endured by their brain and you have a recipe for disaster that not only affects the wrestler themselves but the people in their lives.

John Cena is one of the most influential wrestlers as of today.

"Hustle, Loyalty, Respect"-- that's what he spreads. Simply put, John Cena is the "Good Guy" of the WWE. His fan-base ranges from children to teenagers to adults (soldiers even). In my opinion, he is the Face of the WWE today.

Source: TMZ
TMZ.com is reporting that Matt Hardy was rushed to an emergency room in North Carolina this morning after falling down in his home.
Sources told the gossip site that Hardy hadn't been feeling well, but did not provide any details as to what caused him to fall down. The extent of his injuries are currently unknown, although a family member said that Hardy is expected to be released from the hospital tomorrow.
This follows a wild week for the former TNA star. Hardy was arrested for a DWI this past Saturday in North Carolina. State trooper B.J. Smith indicated that Hardy was not drunk, but "appeared to have taken some type of impairing substance" at the time of his crash and subsequent arrest. Hardy submitted to a blood test, results of which are currently pending.
TNA promptly terminated Matt Hardy's contract following the arrest. Matt had already been on suspension, reportedly due to tardiness at live events. He had not appeared for the organization since May 30.
Earlier today, Hardy posted a video spoofing this past weekend's arrest. In addition to that, Hardy also publicly tweeted a phone number, which apparently doesn't belong to him, asking girlfriend Reby Sky to call it because his cell phone had stopped working after he had dropped it in the hot tub. Reby replied back, telling him to remove the number.Hardy is due to appear in court Sept. 28. Before the accident over the weekend, Hardy was also cited for reckless driving and is scheduled for another October 11th court date.
