i think he was 10th squad because hitsugaya is the newest captain and urahara said to ichigo's father that ur powers had returned after 20 years or something like that
btw this happened after the grand fisher died

yeah, 10th is more likely that anything i guess. unles it was stated how long its been since the academy days of renji's VC group since gin was a VC at the time.
